Horizon Housing, Queensland’s leading social and affordable housing provider, has taken out the Australasian Housing Institute’s (AHI) prestigious Excellence in Social Housing Award in Queensland, putting the company in the running for the national awards in October.

Nominated for its integrated approach to the delivery of social and affordable housing in the Surat Basin region of Queensland in response to increased pressures on local housing supply, Horizon Housing was singled out for its focus in making the vision of many players a reality.

Working with major resource companies such as Santos and Origin Energy, as well as local governments in the Maranoa and Queensland Government Horizon Housing has delivered 14 new dwellings for sale to local residents and 62 rental properties offered at discounts rates to ease pressure on housing costs for locals, with more development in planning stages.

Horizon Housing CEO, Jason Cubit, said the award win demonstrates what can be achieved when big business, not for profits and government work together.

“Taking out the AHI Award for Excellence in Housing Award really shows the power of bringing together the vision of many companies to achieve best for community outcomes,” Mr Cubit said.

“We’re very proud and would like to extend our appreciation to our partners in the Surat for helping this come to fruition. We’re excited about the national awards in October, but in the meantime we will continue to work towards delivering the best social and affordable housing solutions across Queensland and Australia.”

The AHI Awards formally recognise and reward excellence in professional practice from grass roots to most senior levels and are designed to promote the positive impact social housing professionals make on people’s lives.

The AHI National Awards will be announced on 28 October 2015 in a ceremony in Perth.
